The Avengers Vault by Peter A David.

avengers

I received a review copy of the Avengers Vault and when I first opened the book I immediately fell in love with it. Just looking at the images and sketches it draws you into the Avengers. You immediately get a better appreciation of what the artists did for these characters. The book is extremely easy to read with larger print which makes it a great choice for fans of all ages.

This is a perfect companion book to give to someone who is newly into the Marvel Universe and wants more a basic background of 4 of the major character in the Avengers. There are chapters for each character like the Hulk, Captain American, Thor and Iron Man. Each chapter goes into the background of the character as well as talks about their villains and how the characters were created in real life.

There are 10 removable sheets inside the book which are incredible. Each one is certainly worthy of framing and hanging on a wall and will be great conversation pieces. I would also consider this to be a great table top book. You can easily pick it up and read a few pages without losing a beat.

Personally I wish they would have gone into more detail on some of the other Avengers like Black Window or Hawkeye which are shown on the cover but they are at least brought up throughout the book.

Thunder Press will release Marvel The Avengers Vault by Peter A. David this March 2015.

5 Must try sit down restaurants for a first timer in Walt Disney World

Of course food tastes are going to vary by the individual or family. I tried to make a list where you get a little more for you money than just food. Having some sort of entertainment is an added bonus. But here are 5 must try sit down restaurants for a first timer visiting Walt Disney World.

Ohana’s located at the Polynesian Village Resort.

This is an family style meal where all grilled meats are cooked on long skewers on an open flame consisting of Turkey, Pork and Sirloin.  Side dishes include stir-fired vegatables, fried dumplings and lo mein noodles. Desert is a delicious caramel bread pudding which you will most certainly want seconds of.  Kids will love this place just for the coconut races which happen every hour or so.

Character Breakfast Buffet

There are several choices to choose from but some of my favorites are Chef Mickeys located at the Contemporary Resort with Mickey, Minnie, Goofy and Donald. Cape May Cafe at the Beach Club has Minnie, Donald and Goofy dressed in their bathing suits which gives you more of a relaxed feeling. Crystal Palace in the Magic Kingdom is a great spot to enjoy breakfast with Winnie the Pooh and Friends. Get an early reservation at 8 AM to experience Main St USA with few guests walking around.  All three choices will have the characters walking around and interacting with guests so everyone will have time for some fun photo ops.

50s Prime Time Cafe in Disney’s Hollywood Studios

This is a fun restaurant to experience with your family. Its a throw back to when you actually had to sit down as a family and eat your whole meal including the vegetables. Sitting in a 50’s inspired kitchen will certainly make the experience more enjoyable. Your going to find typical comfort food on the menu like Meatloaf or Chicken Pot Pie. Be sure to keep your elbows off the table or you could be in big trouble.

Hoop-Dee-Doo Musical Revue at Fort Wilderness Resort

This dinner show is a western themed vaudeville act. It takes place in Pioneer Hall located in Fort Wilderness resort. The food is served family style which includes a Salad, buckets of BBQ spare ribs and fried chicken, corn, and baked beans. Price includes
unlimited soda,  beer, wine and sangria as well as coffee and tea.

Biergarten located in the Germany Pavilion in Epcot

This is a family style buffet that makes you feel like you are in Germany experiencing Oktoberfest. There is live entertainment as well as a dance floor for you or your kids to enjoy the sounds of the oompah band.  Not only can you get liters or beer here but you can enjoy tasty German food like bratwurst, pork schnitzel and spaetzle. Be advised that you may get seated with total strangers at your table.

Professionally I’ve held the titles of Account Executive, Business Development Manager, Relationship Manager, Key Accounts Manager, and Sales Engineer.   All those titles are just fancy words on a business card that mean I’m going to try to sell you something.  I spend all day going from place to place trying to convince people to use our product/service instead of our competitors.  Every day I meet with clients that I know so well that I invited them to my wedding and complete strangers who want nothing to do with me.  I log hours each day behind the wheel of my car to get to meetings, presentations, and cold calls.   I’ve experience the highest high of closing million dollar deals and the lowest low of being fired for lack of production.  At the end of every month no matter if I’m toasting success with champagne or failure with cheap beer I always find a way to put money aside for a Walt Disney World vacation.  Because I believe once you make the determination that a Walt Disney World vacation isn’t a once in a lifetime event you can plan it around getting relief from the things that drain you.  So I listed the three things that I’m not wild about in my profession and how I use my time in Orlando to escape.

Transportation –As I mentioned I spend a majority of my day behind the wheel of my car going from stop to stop day after day.  One of the great appeals of going to Walt Disney World for me is that I don’t have to drive.  We actually planned our last trip around being on roads as little as possible.  The only time we used transportation that involved roads was the Magical Express to and from the airport and bus trips to Downtown Disney and Animal Kingdom.  By staying at the Boardwalk Villas we used Friendships as much as possible and would walk through Epcot to get to the Monorail to visit Magic Kingdom.   I even refused to go on Tomorrowland Speedway because I was not going to do any driving all week.  I’m sure there are plenty of advantages to having a car on your WDW vacation, but I prefer to leave all the driving to Disney.

Communication – When I give out my business card to someone it has all of my information on it and I openly tell people to call, text, or email me at will.  My hours are no longer 8-5 but rather anytime the little light in the upper left hand corner of my phone is blinking.  If I don’t answer that email at 3AM I run the risk of my client finding someone that will.  I guess that is why my favorite part of Spaceship Earth are the scenes before mass communication was invented.   This is why once I board my flight to Orlando my phone gets put on airplane mode and stays on airplane mode I arrive safely at my house.  It’s my favorite function because it turns my phone into my camera and nothing more.  My wife handles all the communication with family, friends, and Disney and it’s a beautiful thing.

Rejection – In my line of work I get up every morning with the understanding that I’m going to be told no a lot more than I’m going to be told yes.  I understand I’m going to be told no through body language, via text, via email, and worst of all to my face.  The absolute best part of a trip to Walt Disney World is that you can go interact with thousands of cast members during your trip without hearing the word no.  They all go the extra mile to make sure that I’m having the best time possible.   When I’m at Walt Disney World I feel like I am the most important client that they have and that feeling is what keeps me coming back.

Once I was able to highlight the things I dealt with on a daily basis that I wanted to avoid I put together a great vacation plan.  I was able to return from vacation actually feeling refreshed and ready to get back to work.  It doesn’t hurt that going to Walt Disney World is like going to a sales clinic because no one is a better salesman than Mickey Mouse!

disney dining plan, dole whips, epcot, lefou's brew, quick service, snack credits, sushi, Walt Disney World

For those who like the Disney dining plan or for those who have never used it before here is the top 5 Best and Worst Snacks to use on the dining plan.

Best

5. Ice Cream: Located on Main St USA at the Plaza Ice Cream Parlor you can treat yourself to an old-fashioned vanilla and chocolate ice cream with hot fudge, peanut butter drizzle, whipped cream and a cherry all of that for $5.39

4. Starbucks: Those Frappuccino’s that everyone loves are part of the snack credits. That means if you want a Venti size for yourself or to share then go for it, because its included. Price is roughly $5.49

3. Funnel Cakes: These delicious fried treats with powdered sugar are all over Walt Disney World. Better yet at Roughly $5.69 these are a steal with a snack credit.

2. Sushi: If you are walking around Epcot and you are in the Japan Pavilion and have a craving for Sushi then head to the Kabuki Cafe. Here you can choose from a limited selection of Sushi but at $4.98 its a great use of your snack credits.

1. Dole Whip,  Lefou’s Brew or Citrus Swirl: These sweet treats are just great snacks to have period. Dole Whips can be found at Aloha Isle in Advenureland. The Dole Whip float which is Vanilla Ice Cream resting in Pineapple juice  at $4.99 its the perfect use of a snack Credit. Lefou’s Brew Located at Gaston’s Tavern in the new Fantasyland is frozen Apple Slush with a hint of Toasted Marshmellow and a Passion Fruit Top priced at $4.49. My personal favorite the Citrus Swirl located at Sunshine Tree Terrace in Adventureland. This is Vanilla Ice Cream with Orange Slush. Priced at $3.79 it is just too tasty to pass up.

Worst

5. Soda: It ranges from $2.99 to $3.29 while the larger size gives you a better bang for the buck. Your better off quenching your thirst on a tasty Dole Whip instead.

4. Assorted Chips: Throughout all the snack stands and quick service restaurants you can grab a bag of potato chips. At $3.25 you would be better off grabbing any other snack that you can only find in Disney. Say a Jalapeno Stuffed Cheese Pretzel for $5.00

3. Chocolate-Chip Cookies: At several snack stand you can buy some cookies. At  $2.50 your better off heading to the Plaza Ice Cream Parlor and grabbing an ice cream sandwich.

2.Coffee: I know you need the caffeine to get your day going. Regular Coffee at most snack and quick service restaurants is roughly $2.29. This is not a good way to spend your snack credits. Pay out of pocket or head to Starbucks and grab a latte.

1. Bottled Water: At $2.50 this is a terrible waste of a snack credit. Just head to a quick service area and ask for an ice water. Its free and it saves you a snack credit.

This is just a basic guide and there may be other options that will save you money with snack credits. But these are ones I highly recommend checking out.

Wishes has always been my favorite night time spectacular. I have always loved listening to the music but after my 2010 trip I had more of an emotional attachment to the show.

Back in 2010 my wife and I made our last trip as non parents. Granted my son was cooking in the oven but he wasn’t here just yet. This trip is definitely a top 5 trip of all time for us.

Staying at Old Key West we were able to just really relax and really appreciate each other before our son was born. We spent more time just walking in the parks as opposed to riding attractions. It was more of a stop and smell the roses type of trip. I really enjoyed the time we had for ourselves. We didn’t need to go commando style we appreciated everything that was around us. I can recall sitting in the flower garden in the UK Pavilion and just admiring how pretty and actually how quiet everything was. Or just sitting in different spots along Main Street USA and just people watch. Sometimes even in Disney you need time to just relax and soak it all in.

As nighttime approached and we found our spot to watch Wishes it was then that I realized just how special Disney really can be. Over the years my wife and i have collected a jar full of memories but now as the birth of our son approached I knew just how different those memories were going to be. I imagined what it would be like taking him on his first ride, or meeting Mickey Mouse for the first time. Or just the simple moments that happen for no reason. I had so many great memories of Walt Disney World and I want my kids to have those family memories that last a lifetime.

As the music from Wishes played my emotions, thoughts and dreams caught up with me and I had tears of joy running down my face. At that moment Wishes and I connected. As the words say “Dreams really do come true”. At that moment my dreams were coming true. I had a beautiful wife, a child on the way and I was truly in the happiest place on Earth.

Each Disney trip is special and unique. There is always one memory that stands out and it will be something you will never forget. That trip had many moments and the best thing is that the next trip will have ever more moments but this time I have 2 kids to share it with.

books, cinderella, magical world of disney, Walt Disney World

Disney Publishing was kind enough to send me review copies of these two new versions of Cinderella. With the resurgence of interest in the story due to the upcoming film. These two books will be great additions to your collection.

                                                                  disney cinderella cover

The First book I will review is the Live Action Picture Book of Disney’s Cinderella. Released on January 27th and comes with a cool eBook code that has audio too. The story isn’t your traditional Cinderella story we know from Walt’s classic film. It centers around Ella who finds her way to her true love in Prince Kit. Many references from her journey will be familiar however. The story is written by famed children’s author Brittany Candau. Candau delivers the story in a wonderful way that children will not only relate to but love hearing over and over. With every great children’s book the story needs illustrations. Cory Godbey brings this story to life with his illustrations. They are drawn in a whimsical comic fashion that kids will relate to very easily.

The next book is Walt Disney’s Cinderella. This book will be a must have for children and adults alike.

                                                       walt disney cinderella cover

This is the story we all know and love from Disney’s classic film. Cynthia Rylant retells the story in a very child friendly way without losing any of it’s magic. What really made me excited to open this book however, were the illustrations. Many of you know the name Mary Blair. Blair is a Disney Legend and was one of Walt’s original concept artists. Her work on projects like Peter Pan, Cinderella, Song of the South, and many others helped shape those iconic films. Her work can still be found in Walt Disney World today in the Contemporary Resort and EPCOT’s Mexico Pavilion. The artwork contained in this book is nothing short of amazing. Each one could be a full size poster. I would highly recommend adding this to your Disney collection.

Both of these books retail for $16.99 and are available at www.disneybooks.com or your favorite book retailer.

Disney, Disneyland, The Haunted Mansion, Walt Disney World

Hello again to all my TikiHeads and HappyHaunts out there in the Disney universe! In this entry to the Blog I’d like to introduce you to a Character that I have been developing on Twitter based on a Tombstone Epitaph that can be found in the graveyard at The Haunted Mansion in Disneyland and The Magic Kingdom.                            I wanted to find a character that really had no backstory so that I could develop my own. Not to infringe on the rights of Disney or create any controversy, but to enhance the enjoyment for Disney fans all around the globe and show my DisneySide, if you will. So, since my name is Dave, I immediately looked at Brother Dave and found it to be a fit.                                                                                                            I wasn’t able to find any backstory on a character already in the Disney folklore, nor did I find anyone using that as a character on any social media. However, the obvious reason for the Tombstone existing as it does is a nod to a particular man that worked for Disney that I must pay homage to before I go any further.              IMG_1113                    Dave Burkhart graduated with honors in design from California Institute of the Arts and began his career with the Walt Disney Company in 1967 as an artist and model maker for WDI, Walt Disney Imagineering. He was responsible for building architectural and show models, including full scale sets. He later became Show Designer and Field Art Director being responsible for show, ride, and facility concepts. Some of his attraction credits include Swiss Family Tree House, 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea, and yes, The Haunted Mansion. In 1996 he left Disney and joined another company and currently can be found at ApogeeAttractions.com alongside former Disney members Norm Doerges and Ken Busch.                                                              IMG_1114     On tombstones and crypts at the Disneyland, Walt Disney World and Tokyo versions of The Haunted Mansion are the names of characters who may or may not be in the actual attraction itself. Most are tributes to Imagineers who were involved in the creation of the attraction or names based on characters created by those Imagineers. The Tombstone for Brother Dave is a direct tribute to Dave Burkhart and reads, Dear Departed Brother Dave, He Chased A Bear Into A Cave.                                                                                                               So, I created this Twitter account, Brother Dave, where I do mostly random tweets in character as if I’m a Ghost residing in the Mansion at Walt Disney World. Sometimes I will give you up to the minute wait time tweets by using one of the several apps I use for up to the minute info. I will also from time to time encourage you to check out the Disney Parks Blog for merchandise, special event or attraction information from my friends Steven Miller, Erin Glover and Jenn Fickley-Baker. I picked the Magic Kingdom version of The Mansion because of my friendship and affiliation with the guys at Enchanted Tiki Talk. It has proven to be a good match for us as you may have heard me do a few intros to the PodCast as Brother Dave. It has also been my honor to be a guest on one of the shows as well as perform an Ad spot. I hope to continue the relationship and really give them credit in getting my creative DisneySide public.                                                                                                   I recently used Twitter to post a background story for my character, Brother Dave. I believe it barely went noticed as I slyly did it during a conversation with a friend of Enchanted Tiki Talk about his podcast, Dixie Landings Radio. It was a short impromptu entry of a story that I had prepared for this media, but I went with it. It is, as follows.                                                                                                                           My name is David Chadwick, a merchant from New Orleans. I had recently invested in a SideWheel Steamboat named Paragon, built by one William Parsons of Cincinnati in 1819. It was not more than a year from then that I embarked on a trip from New Orleans to Louisville to accompany a full cargo of my goods. The ships Master, Mr Cummings, was a tall man with eyes of steel, yet had a comforting disposition that suited the ships elegance. As fate would have it, his sister, Romena Cummings, was also aboard as an observer for the company. I had met Romena twice before but soon became quite enamored with her beauty and soft spoken demeanor. I would delightfully court her until that fateful day. It was on a days stop at the Port of Memphis that Romena and I decided to go ashore for a leisurely stroll and picnic in a nearby wooded area. Despite the fact that the port had not yet been cobbled and was a muddy mess, we set out ashore with a basket of chicken and biscuits from the galley. A Port hand agreed to arrange a buggy transport to a secluded area where we were promised to enjoy the natural surroundings. We found a clearing, but because it was a very warm and sunny day decided to walk further toward the edge of the woods for shade. As we approached our spot we were frightened and surprised by a rather large Black Bear. It had smelled the aroma of our feast and immediately took after Romena before she could put the basket down. She fled down a hill toward a cave that we had passed. I tried to call out for her to drop the basket but in her haste she couldn’t hear me. I ran after her and the bear and watched as they both disappeared into that cave. I then, too, chased the bear into the cave. Alas, the last few moments of my life were spent in darkness… calling out for my love, and measuring the pain of the bear tearing at my flesh only by the pain of losing my beloved Romena. I spent many years as a tortured lost soul, until the day Mr. Disney found me and allowed me residence in his lovely manor.                                                                                                 And so goes, my story of Brother Dave and how he came to be at The Haunted Mansion. I encourage you to follow my character, Brother Dave on Twitter, @DepartedDave and watch for him as he may materialize now and then on The Enchanted TikiTalk PodCast. And, who knows what else he may have planned for the future….I hear he’s thinking of his own HappyHaunts Blog, perhaps? Until next time, Mahalo, David
